The Laboratory of Polymers and Biomaterials evolved formally on October 1st, 2016 from the Polymer Physics Laboratory, which history dates back to the early 70-s of the XX-th century when this lab has been founded as independent group in the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences. The first leaders of the group were Prof. Stefan Zahorski and Prof. Andrzej Ziabicki, giving the group the thematic impulses related mostly to polymer rheology as well as to polymer phase transitions, particularly being influenced by external, orienting fields. Some of the important papers and monographs from the early period of the group’s activity were related to the crystallization of polymers in the potential fields like mechanical and electrical as well as to the more applied aspects related to polymer melt spinning. Irrespective of the topics, the activity of our group from the very beginning was naturally divided into two main streams. The first one was associated with the basic aspects of polymer physics, and the second one was oriented more toward some applications, being a natural implication of the fundamental research. In the early period of the activity, the focus of research was located rather on very fundamental topics from which the most important was related to the polymer phase transitions under the influence of oriented fields. Nowadays, the challenges of the modern world force the shift of our activity and aims to more applied research but not forgetting at the same time about some basic aspects of our research.
